Everyone who recycles knows that there is a right and a wrong way to do so. It is undeniable that recycling lowers the negative impact we have on the environment and helps counteract global warming. Environmental issues are a serious challenge, despite the objections of some, we all should strive to give as much as we can to preserve and protect the environment. Recycling can have a lot of financial, ecological and social benefits. Not recycling correctly can lead to contaminants that can decrease the quality of the recycled material. The good news is that recycling correctly is easy and does not require any special efforts.

6 Tips for recycling correctly.

1. Remove bottle caps from single-use bottles.

single use bottles

Bottle caps cannot be recycled. If bottles still have caps on them as soon as they reach the recycling plant they are thrown away instead of being recycled because removing the caps off of the bottles will waste too much of the worker's time.

2. Do not recycle anything that has food still stuck to it.

pizza box

This will include pizza boxes, napkins, paper plates and anything you have used to soak up spilt liquids (other than water). Food residues can lead to unwanted contaminants in the manufacture of recycled materials which makes them unusable. Instead of throwing away the pizza box, rip off the top part and other parts that food has not gotten to and recycle only them.

3. Wash everything.

glass bottles and jars

Recycling is more effective if the materials are washed firstly. In this way, you will also prevent unwanted smells from occurring in your waste bin. Do not scrub excessively simply wash the items you would like to recycle and remove the paper labelling from glass and plastic bottles.

4.Check the type of plastic your local recycling plant can process.

recycled plastic

There are different types of plastic and not all of them can be recycled. The recycling symbol on the label should have a number, check and see what that number is and only recycle plastic that can be successfully processed.

5. Be careful with paper.

many pieces of paper

If you have passed the paper through a shredder the actual length of the paper strands is lower which means that it cannot be used to successfully produce recycled products. Do not recycle too brightly coloured paper as well as wax paper. The aptest paper for recycling is old notebooks and printer paper.

6. Never toss plastic bags in with the recycling.

Instead, check if you can leave them for recycling in a local supermarket. The best choice for your weekly or daily run to the grocery store is a multi-use cloth bag.
How to recycle correctly, the rules of correct recycling.
The first rule of recycling correctly is to use the correct waste bins for recycling in the home.
Allocate separate waste bins for recycling, glue a sticker or a drawing or simply a label so you are aware of what garbage they contain. You can also apply the same strategy to your workplace. If you live in an apartment building make sure common spaces have separate wastebins for different types of rubbish, they will not take up that much space and everyone will benefit from the recycling process. If you show creativity and use a drawing or a fun picture you will also positively motivate your family at home or your friends in the workplace.

If there are instructions on your wastebin use them.

different types of wastebins

Most wastebins show what type of rubbish is suitable for them.

Do not recycle food, liquid, unwashed plastic cutlery and dishes.

dirty dishes

Do not attempt to recycle unwashed items that used to store food. You can throw paper that you have wiped food with away in a specific place outside where it will quickly dissolve under natural conditions- rain, sun and natural processes. The paper will dissolve, just be careful not to litter throwing it randomly away.

Decrease your use of packaging.

plastic packaging

If you can purchase in bulk, buy one big package instead of five small ones. One of the most common issues with plastic packaging is that it has to be washed- plastic yoghurt containers for example have to be washed thoroughly before they can be recycled, a lot of the contents of the container will stick to the sides of the packaging, wash it along with your dishes and then it is ready to be recycled. Do not forget if you are throwing away glass waste or paper in a plastic bag remove it before recycling.

Paper that is suitable for recycling cannot be greasy or dirty.

used paper

Unlike plastic packaging and containers paper absorbs grease, oil, food, liquid or others. These contaminants damage the paper and make it unusable for recycling. If you try to recycle this type of paper you will only make it more difficult for it to be processed later. As much as we would all like you cannot recycle pizza boxes, they have no second lease on life.

Decrease your use of or eliminate disposable cutlery or items.

plastic forks

This step is easier for certain items rather than others - plastic glasses, plates, forks can be replaced with metal or wooden ones. Apart from plastic forks and cutlery wet wipes, paper napkins and even diapers are one of the worst offenders when it comes to environmental issues. These items make our lives easier, however, we can consciously limit their use and decide which of them we can simply eliminate.

Wash before you recycle.

yogurt container

This habit is really useful, however, hard to maintain. The rubbish you are going to recycle mustn't be contaminated additionally be grease and other solvents that will make recycling difficult. Do not forget the jar that used to have your favourite raspberry jam in it goes in one bin its lid in another.

Crush the plastic juice or water bottles and close them with their lids.

crushed plastic bottles

Doing so will prevent the bottles from regaining their original shape back. You will save space for more rubbish. The bottle should not regain its shape when crushed, however, make sure to seal the bottle well with its bottle cap.

Fold boxes or cardboard packaging so they become compact.

folded boxes

You just become more efficient doing this. Check if there are any stickers, tape, textile ribbons, paperclips or other elements that cannot be recycled and remove those before throwing the boxes away.
Throw away any items that cannot be recycled along with the general waste.
It is unfortunate, however, not all types of rubbish can be recycled. If you have doubts that a paper, plastic or metal object cannot be processed simply throw it away along with the general waste. It is better to make the work of the local recycling plant easier, not double it.

Throw away bio-degradable garbage in the appropriate space.

looking up at trees

This can be your garden, where, paper, food or other bio-degradable garbage can be subjected to corrosive forces of nature, rain, moisture, sun and others. Some waste can also be burned. You can also do this if you live in an apartment in the city. All you need to do is find an appropriate outdoor space to dispose of your biodegradable rubbish. You can also get a waste disposal unit fitted.
You cannot recycle old mirrors, plates, windows and light bulbs.

Old items made of glass such as mirrors, plates, windows, light bulbs make sorting garbage even harder. Do not attempt to recycle these, the glass component of these items is a non-recyclable material and they should go in the general waste.

Recycle as much plastic as you can.

plastic recycling

The recycling industry in your city knows how to sort plastic. Do not recycle containers and plastic bottles that used to contain toxic ingredients, medication containers, electrical appliances or plastic car parts. Never burn plastic they will release toxic fumes.

Find the nearest location to you that collects used batteries.

recycled batteries

There is a special way to recycle batteries. Many large grocery chains collect used batteries. Gather the batteries and leave them there next time you visit the grocery store, make this task a habit.

Recycling used electronics.

Computers, printers, old TV sets can be given to a collection point for electronics and waste. Not every location has one but you can check online and find the nearest branch. Electronics and electrical appliances have components that can be successfully recycled, parts of them can even be given a new lease on life if correctly repaired.
